World Health Concerns

           (50 Points)

Purpose: Now that you have selected a country to read about in ILA, you will eventually be creating an advertisement, of your choosing, to promote travel to your chosen country.  As part of your advertisement you will include a section called “Travel Cautions” that will detail certain cautions that travelers should be aware of before entering your country.  One such caution will be the various infectious diseases that travelers could potentially become infected with by traveling to your country.

Procedure:

1.       Visit the World Health Organization’s website at: www.who.int/en/

2.     Download Part II: Global Health Indicators of the World Health Statistics 2011 publication (or use the printed version in class).

3.     Use section 3 “Selected Infectious Diseases” to determine which diseases have the most amount of reported cases in your country.

4.     Select the most reported infectious disease (the one that occurs the most) from the list below.

5.     Research the answers to the questions in this packet by using:

a.      http://www.who.int/topics/en/   (World Health Organization)

b.     http://www.cdc.gov/DiseasesConditions/  (Center for Disease Control)

WHAT TO DO:

1.                                                         Go to http://apps.who.int/ghodata/

2.                                                       Click on Environmental Health

3.                                                       Click on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

4.                                                       Click exposure

Task #1:  Find your country and create a data table showing the percentage of population using improved sanitation facilities over the 4 or 5 years shown (The independent variable would be the different years and the dependent variable would be the percentage of population using improved sanitation facilities-make 3 separate columns; suburban, rural, urban).

Task #2: Create another data table identical to the one you created for your country.  This time, however, use the data for the United States.

Task #3:  Bring both data tables to math class where Mrs. Felix will have you graph the data for your advertisement.  This will allow your potential travelers to compare sanitation in the USA to your country.  It will therefore “caution” travelers about levels of sanitation and risks of contracting infectious diseases.
